Dermatology

Introduction

Neurology is the branch of medicine focused on treatment of disorders in the skin. This requires many surgical and medical skills.

Key Concepts

Dermatology mostly revolves around the skins, hair, and nails. The skin is the outermost layer of defense in a human body and regulates body temperature. In other words, the skin is a barrier against external thermal and mechanical factors. The skin also helps retain moisture, trapping water within the body. Moreover, the skin also reduces the amount of UV radiation which reaches the body, in turn reducing the effects that it may incur. Another important function of the skin is the production of vitamin D, preventing diseases such as rickets and regulates the immune system.

Medical: Introduce the different types of therapy used in a specific type of disease in your medical specialty.

A specific disease related to dermatology is cellulitis, a skin infection. Oftentimes it can be painful. Initially, cellulitis can appear swollen and discolored. The area of the body that cellulitis most often affects is the feet and lower legs. It occurs when bacteria, most commonly streptococcus, enter the skin through a break. This can be initiated by small injuries such as cuts and wounds. Symptoms of cellulitis include pain and inflammation of the skin. Usually, cellulitis is treated through antibiotics, for periods as long as 14 days. However, if conditions worsen, patients may need to receive antibiotics intravenously.
