ON PRONOVOST: Catheters

Before The Surgery

Catheters are medical devices that are slipped in a patient’s vessels, body cavity, or duct that can assist in bringing fluids in and out of the body as well as other functions. However, inserting a tube from the outside to the inside of a person’s body can be life-threatening if they are inserted properly.

Peter Pronovost, a critical care physician and director of the Johns Hopkins-affiliated Quality and Safety Research Group, devised FIVE simple steps every doctor should check off before and during a procedure needing to insert catheters.
