Space Age Collaboration

On January 29th, 2022, the Teens In Health winter internship was joined by a team of UC Berkeley students, along with Xiaomeng Hu and Dan Zevin, to speak about Space Age, and explain the logic behind space research and how we can utilize scientific ideals and a large variety of medical/science related topics. Countless different sub topics were covered, including microgravity, T-cells, protection of RNA in stem cell research, and their very own SpaceX16 launch experience. All of the students and professionals who joined Teens and Health were very effective in answering any questions that interns may have asked. After the Space Age presentation, the entire team began the workshop and transitioned into Activity One. Activity One involved watching an educational video on bodily defense mechanisms, and creating a flowchart with a group that corresponded to these mechanisms. After all of the different groups presented their flowcharts, we began Activity Two. This activity built off of the first activity, but instead of a flowchart, interns created a presentation of defense mechanisms in the form of a story or comic strip. Afterwards, interns presented their work once more, and provided feedback to the guests on how both of the activities went through a survey. Overall, interns gained a vast amount of knowledge of space research and human body defense mechanisms through this workshop, and it was an effective educational effort.
