Hi! My name is Tho, and I’m a rising senior at Amador Valley High School. In school, I’m a team lead for Science Olympiad and the Senior Lab Director for Biotech Club. Outside of school, I love playing clarinet, writing poems, and binge-watching Law and Order. I’m interested in pursuing biology and medicine, and I hope to gain more research experience through Teens in Health. This summer, I’ll be preparing for college applications and planning to enjoy my last year in high school!
I joined Teens in Health because of its mission to make research and volunteer opportunities more available to teens, and because of the chance to conduct my own scientific research.
I chose stem cell research because I find stem cells fascinating: we’re able to take normal cells, freeze them in time, and revert them so they can differentiate into any kind of cell. Stem cells open up infinite possibilities for research, but also for the real world, helping thousands of people by curing disease and illness.
While I don’t have any specific areas of stem cell research I’m interested in, I do hope to learn more about stem cells and choose an area to concentrate on!
One particularly interesting science article I read was about the potential of biomaterials to serve as biodegradable implants for various injuries. I appreciated how clear and concise the language was, and how the authors provided enough background so I could understand their research in context.
